I understand that a break will be included in the program and students are encouraged to bring water and a snack.īy registering for the class, I agree and understand the restrictions, policies, and procedures outlined above. Well watch films about these magnificent sea creatures and learn about squid adaptations through our naturalist led dissection.Observe the internal anatomy of the squid. Also spread the arms in order to locate and observe the buccal mass. Identify the external anatomy: arms, the mantle the eyes, the tentacles, the siphon or funnel and the swimming fins located on the mantle. Spread the mantle apart and secure the sides down onto the dissecting tray with dissecting pins. Pin the squid to the dissection tray in the dorsal position. Using scissors, carefully cut through the mantle from the cavity opening at the collar down to the fins. I understand students should treat each other with respect failure to do so could result in being dropped from the class. Place the squid posterior side up on your dissecting tray. The Squid Dissection Learning Lab includes close interaction with squid, including, but not limited to: handling squid with gloves, interacting with squid fluids in a laboratory setting, and being in a room where the smell of seafood is apparent.I understand I am responsible for arranging transport with/for my student(s) promptly at the start and end of the class. These classes differ from our regular programs in that they offer more of a structured, in-depth, and hands-on learning environment. I understand this class is part of a partnership with UCSD.I understand students should arrive promptly for class and stay for the full duration of the class.I understand students must attend all classes. Students will develop scientific research skills as they learn about squids and other animals that make their homes in ocean ecosystems. Things may get a little inky as students work together to dissect a real squid.
